Mystery Heron by Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Center

John Taylor saw a mysterious heron today by the pond south of Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Center. He didn't have binoculars with him, but he was able to view it clearly for an extended time. He thinks that it was an immature Yellow-crowned Night Heron. Read his analysis in his outing report.

2012 Indiana County Christmas Bird Count

The Todd Bird Club held its 30th Indiana Christmas Bird Count on December 28, 2012, due to poor weather conditions on the usual December 26 date. A total of 58 participats tallied 9094 individuals of 80 species, plus 3 additional species during count week. The Indiana Count had record numbers of Tundra Swans (533), Canvasback ducks (15), Lesser Scaups (32), White-winged Scoter (1), Ruddy Ducks (223), Red-throated Loon (1), Wilson's Snipe (3), Rock Pigeons (392), Pileated Woodpeckers (25), Northern Mockingbirds (13), and White-winged Crossbills (62). In addition, the Indiana Count recorded its first ever Surf Scoter during count week. The Jim Dearing award for best bird was given to Ed Donley for hearing a Barred Owl at Yellow Creek State Park. Christmas Bird Count Date Change - Friday, December 28

Due to a poor weather forecast for December 26, we are moving the Christmas Bird Count to Friday, December 28. We hope to still have the dinner afterwards at Hoss'. Stay tuned for confirmation about the dinner location.

My Feathered Friends - Bird Portraits, Steve Gosser

Steve Gosser, Todd Bird Club member, naturalist, and photographer, is exhibiting his bird photography at the Allegheny RiverStone Center for the Arts, in Foxburg, PA, April 29 - May 28, 2012. If you'll be in the Foxburg area come and check it out. Foxburg is located along the Allegheny river just south of I-80. There are 56 photos on display.

Managing Young Forest Habitat Workshop

Misery Bay Provincial Park Sharp-tailed Grouse Lek Observation

Petition to Allow Whooping Cranes to Complete Their Migration

Operation Migration's ultra-light aircraft have been grounded while escorting whooping cranes to their wintering grounds. They are 50 miles from their final destination, awaiting an FAA ruling in their favor. Consider signing the petition asking the FAA to expedite a waiver which would allow the ultra-light and the cranes to complete their journey.

2011 Indiana County Christmas Bird Count

The Todd Bird Club held its 29th Indiana Christmas Bird Count on December 26, 2011, with 63 people participating. The count tallied 9029 individuals of 71 species. There were more waterfowl species than usual, because of the ice-free water, resulting in the highest overall species count since 1997. The Indiana Count had record numbers of Green-winged Teals (4), Hooded Mergansers (34), Bald Eagles (3), and House Sparrows (809). The Jim Dearing award for best bird was given to John Taylor's group for spotting a Common Goldeneye at Yellow Creek State Park. View the detailed count results.
