"Who's Coming for Dinner" Newsletter Article Ending

Project Owlnet has also revealed that Saw-whet Owl numbers are higher than previously believed. They were once thought to be rare simply because they are so well camouflaged and seldom seen. During the day, they remain still and silent, blending seamlessly into hemlock and rhododendron.

Some Saw-whet Owls do winter in Pennsylvania. Places like Presque Isle, Allegheny National Forest, and the Allegheny Front offer the dense shelter they prefer and may provide opportunities to glimpse these elusive beauties. Still, seasoned birders warn that sightings are rare—many report seeing only three or four in decades of birding, and some have never seen one in the wild at all.

Attending an owl banding evening in the fall, is a good way to get a better chance of seeing one of these birds up close, plus it will give you an appreciation of the science and research that is currently being done on these special birds.

Ornithology Camp for Teens

The third annual Ornithology Camp at Saint Vincent College, Latrobe, PA, will be held June 14-17, 2026. The camp is restricted to students ages 13-18. The camp features four days of activities that teach students how ornithological research is conducted through participation in bird banding, nest monitoring, surveying, radio-tracking, and song identification. Classroom lessons include study-ing nesting behavior, migration, raptor identification, and bird anatomy. Dr. James Kellam, Professor of Biological Sciences, will conduct the sessions. Tuition is $200 per student for lodging in single-occupancy, air-conditioned rooms, food, and supplies. Financial aid is available.

New Starting Time for Monthly Meetings
Tuesday, November 4, 2025
Beginning on February 3, 2026, the Todd Bird Club's monthly meetings will start at 6:30 pm. Arrive at 6:00 pm to socialize beforehand. This earlier starting time will allow club members to drive in the daylight in more months, and those who are coming from a long distance can return home earlier at night. This motion was approved at the club's November 2025 meeting.

Tuesday field trips will continue through November 11. Meet on the north shore at the gazebo at 8:00 a.m.

Please note that our Tuesday group will be at the Allegheny Front Hawk Watch on October 14, only meeting at the Yellow Creek State Park Office to carpool to the hawk watch.

Regular deer season starts November 30 and runs through December 13, so we will not have Tuesday outings during that time. Sunday hunting is now permitted, and anyone birding or walking on State Game Lands must wear orange from November 15 through December 15.

Description:
Tuesday outings will continue until regular deer season which starts November 30 and runs through December 13. Meet at the Yellow Creek Park office at 7:30 a.m. through August, so that we can check for shorebirds on the south shore before other park visitors arrive at the beach.

Last Purple Martin Nest Box Check

At yesterday's purple martin nest box check, Luke Stauffer had 14 nests with 45 eggs and 5 nestlings. He will be out of town for a few days, so his next and last nest check will be on Friday, July 11, at 2:00 pm, unless there is heavy rain or a thunderstorm. After that, he will no longer be checking the boxes because he doesn't want to disturb the older nestlings, causing them to pre-fledge.

If you want to participate in the July 11 nest check, go to his home and mini-barn business at 1082 Myers Road, Indiana, PA 15701 near Yellow Creek.

Purple Martin Nesting Box Schedule

Luke Stauffer, who owns a mini-barn business and lives at 1082 Myers Road, Indiana, PA 15701 near Yellow Creek, has invited Todd Bird Club members to attend any of his Purple Martin nest box checks. He plans to check them every five days at 2:00 p.m., unless there is heavy rain or a thunderstorm. His next two nesting box checks are Monday, June 30, and Saturday, July 5. Todd Bird Club members attended his June 25 check and got to share his excitement in finding 14 nests with eggs. At least one of these nests is likely to have nestlings on June 30 and more should hatch by July 5.
